You are applying for a first- or second-year internship and have no experience. What does the interview expect you to know?
A first- or second-year internship interview expects core data structures from your first courses, arrays, strings, hash maps and simple loops, used correctly and explained aloud. Beyond that it scores how you reason, how you take a hint and how quickly you learn, not prior jobs or advanced algorithms.
Answer
Short answer
Less than you fear. A first- or second-year internship interview expects the data structures from your first programming courses (arrays, strings, hash maps, perhaps a stack or queue) used correctly in a small problem. The rest of the score is how you reason aloud, how you respond to a hint and whether you check your own work. Nobody expects job experience; they are hiring for the rate at which you will learn.

Likely follow-ups
- You have only used Python in class. Should you switch to Java or C++ for the interview?
- The interviewer asks the time complexity of your loop and you have not covered big-O formally yet. What do you say?
- Your solution works, and the interviewer asks how you would make it handle a list of a million items. Where do you start?
- What would you ask the interviewer at the end, when you know almost nothing about the team?
