A design token is a named design decision - color, spacing, radius or motion - that products reference by name instead of raw value. Changing one token can silently alter contrast, layout and brand consistency across every pinned consumer.
A design system adoption strategy works when the system is cheaper to use than avoid, measured by component coverage and version lag, and backed by migration help. Forked components should be treated as evidence before they are treated as resistance.
Design system component customization should expose sanctioned variants, slots for content and a visible escape hatch, not arbitrary styling on every part. Once any product can restyle a shared component freely, consistency becomes unenforceable.
