You have been rejected after five interviews this placement season. How do you work out what to change?

Sort the five rejections by the stage where each one ended, because a pattern by stage tells you more than any single rejection. Then fix that stage only: ask for feedback where you can, run mock interviews that recreate it, and practise against it before the next process.

Tell me about something you built. Everything you have built so far was for coursework.

Pick one coursework project, say plainly that it was an assignment and what the brief fixed, then spend the answer on the decisions you made inside that brief, the problem that cost you the most time and what you would change. Owned decisions and honest scope matter more than how impressive the project sounds.

You are asked to bring a real piece of your own work and talk through it. What do you choose, and what do you have to be ready to admit?

Choose a work sample with real decisions in it that you still understand line by line and are allowed to share. Be ready to admit which parts were other people's or a tool's, what is wrong with it, and what you would change, because the interviewer can open any file and ask why it is there.

The role asks for five years of Kafka and I do not see much of it on your CV. Talk me through that.

Say plainly how much of the requirement you have, name the nearest real thing you have done and what transfers from it, and let the recruiter decide. Overstating at the screen buys a technical round you will fail; going quiet ends the process on the call.

What is the piece of work you are proudest of, and why that one?

Choose work whose value you can state in the terms the business used, explain why you are proud of it in a way that reveals your standards, and be ready to be precise about which parts were yours. The choice itself is the signal the interviewer is reading.
