The gap is a consistency check, not a character test
Interviewers see gaps constantly, and by this point in a hiring process the gap is rarely the reason anyone is worried. Redundancies, caring responsibilities, illness, visa waits, relocation and long searches are ordinary features of a working life, and an experienced interviewer has heard all of them. What they are testing is narrower and more mechanical: does your explanation match the dates on your application, will it match what a reference says, and can you discuss an uncomfortable period without either shutting down or over-explaining.
That changes what a good answer optimises for. You are not trying to make the gap look like an achievement. You are trying to remove it as a question, so the rest of the conversation can be about the work.
Dates, reason, closure
The structure that works is three short parts and then silence. Give the dates so the interviewer can reconcile them with the form they are holding. Give the reason in one sentence, in the plainest language available. Then say what ended the period, because that is the part that tells them the situation is resolved rather than ongoing.
The closure sentence is the one candidates omit, and it is the one doing the work. "I was made redundant" leaves the interviewer wondering whether you are still adrift. "I was made redundant in the March restructure, took three months out deliberately, and have been interviewing since the summer for roles at this scope" answers a question they would otherwise have to ask.

Notice the register. Each is factual, none apologises, and none leaves something dangling. On health you owe the interviewer the fact that there was a health matter and that it is resolved; you do not owe them a diagnosis, and an interviewer who presses for one is telling you something useful about the employer.
Where the account stops being believed
The failure that costs offers is not the gap. It is the retro-fitted growth story. Candidates are coached to convert the period into productivity — a certification, a side project, three languages learned — and then cannot answer one specific question about any of it. "I used the time to go deep on distributed systems" collapses the moment somebody asks what you read and what changed in your thinking, and the collapse damages you far more than an honest twelve months of looking after a parent ever would.
So anything you claim about the period has to be specific and true. If you genuinely shipped something, name it and expect to be asked how it works. If you kept current, say what you did in one concrete sentence. And if the honest answer is that you were caring for someone and had no capacity for anything else, that is a complete and creditable answer, because it is what a real life sounds like.
The second failure is a mismatch. Your application form, your CV dates, your public profile and your referee's recollection all have to tell the same story, and background checks are where discrepancies surface, at the worst possible moment. If you were dismissed, or a contract ended early, the version you give in the room needs to be the version that survives verification: describe the outcome accurately, keep any account of the disagreement short and unemotional, and say what you took from it. A candidate who is straightforward about a difficult exit is usually easier to hire than one whose story does not reconcile.
Handing the conversation back
Because the gap is not the topic you want the interview to dwell on, finish by pointing forwards rather than trailing off. One clause is enough: what you were looking for when you came back, and why this role matches it. That returns the conversation to the ground you want to be assessed on.
There is a length discipline underneath all of this. A gap explained in twenty seconds reads as a fact. The same gap explained over two minutes reads as a wound, regardless of the words, because the time you spend on it tells the interviewer how much it still occupies you.
Answer with dates, a reason and a resolution, and let it be boring. A gap somebody has to ask about twice becomes a doubt; a gap answered in three sentences becomes a line on a form.
