Two worries sit behind the question
The first is retention. Somebody is about to spend a considerable amount of money and several months of team capacity on hiring you, and they want to know whether the trajectory you describe runs through this job or past it. A candidate whose plan implies leaving in eighteen months is not disqualified, but the calculation changes, and it changes silently.
The second worry is self-awareness, and it is the one that separates answers. People with a genuine sense of direction talk about the kind of problem they want to be good at and can explain why, usually with reference to something they have already chosen to do. People without one either recite a ladder of titles or say they are open to anything. The ladder sounds ambitious and reveals nothing about judgement; the shrug sounds relaxed and suggests that your career happens to you rather than being chosen.
Neither worry is about accuracy. Nobody expects a five-year forecast to hold, and interviewers know their own companies will look different by then. What they are reading is whether you think about your work deliberately, and whether the deliberate version includes them.
Direction beats destination
The most useful shift is from titles to capability. A title is company-specific, differently defined everywhere, and awkward to state without appearing to demand it. A capability is portable, and describing one lets the interviewer picture the work you would be doing rather than the box you would occupy.

The third and fourth entries show something worth noticing. Ambitions the employer cannot fully satisfy, including entrepreneurial ones, are survivable when they are framed as the reason this role is useful now. What is not survivable is an ambition that makes the job a waiting room.
Consistency with your own history
The quiet failure in this answer is a direction unsupported by anything you have done. A candidate who says they want to be an architect, and who on inspection has never volunteered for a design, never written a proposal, and has moved between roles with no visible thread, has described an aspiration rather than a trajectory. Interviewers do not usually challenge this directly; they simply stop believing the answer, and it costs you the credit the question was offering.
Support it with one piece of evidence from the past instead. The internal move you asked for, the specialism you chose twice, the project you took because it was closer to the work you want. One sentence is enough, and it converts a claim into a pattern. If your history genuinely does not support the direction, then the honest answer is that you are changing course, and saying why you are changing it now is more persuasive than pretending the change is not happening.
The parts you have not decided
The strongest answers usually contain an open question, and candidates suppress it out of a belief that certainty scores better. It does not. The management-versus-depth question in particular is one that almost everyone at mid-career is genuinely undecided about, and a candidate who names the uncertainty and says what would help them resolve it sounds considerably more credible than one with a fully specified ten-year plan.
This is also useful information for the interviewer. A hiring manager who knows you are curious about leading people can put you near that work; one who believes you want it settled and immediately may conclude the role is wrong for you. Being clear about what you do not yet know is a way of getting the right version of the job.
Keep the same honesty about the pace you expect. Vague ambition costs nothing, but an expectation of two promotions in three years is a commitment you are asking the employer to make in a conversation where they cannot make it. If progression matters to you, ask how it works here rather than declaring what you require, and ask it of the recruiter rather than of a peer.
Where compensation and titles belong
A five-year answer built around money reads badly at this stage, not because wanting money is unreasonable but because the question is being asked about your work. Compensation conversations belong with the recruiter, at the point where an offer is being shaped, and they are much more effective there. The same goes for a specific title with a specific date attached. Bringing either into a motivation conversation shifts the interviewer's attention from whether you fit the work to whether you can be afforded, which is not the impression you want to leave a hiring manager holding.
If the honest core of your answer is that you want more scope, more autonomy and better problems, say that. It is what most good engineers mean, it is what most employers can actually offer, and it does not require anyone to promise you a rung on a ladder.
Answer with a direction and one piece of evidence that you are already walking in it. Interviewers do not check the forecast; they check whether the person telling it has been making choices or merely accepting them.
