Before you react, work out which kind you are looking at, because the response differs. Some deadlines are genuine and dull: a requisition that closes at quarter end, an approval that lapses, a start date that has to precede a project, a second candidate waiting on the same headcount. Some are tactical, applied because a candidate who cannot compare is a candidate who cannot negotiate, and twenty-four hours is chosen precisely because it is shorter than any other process can run. And some are neither, produced by a recruiter under internal pressure to close, repeating a date nobody has actually committed to.
One question separates them, and it is not confrontational:
"Understood. Could you send the offer and the deadline over by email, and let me know what drives that date? If it is an approval or a headcount thing I would like to work with it rather than against it."
A real constraint has a name and the recruiter supplies it immediately. A tactical one produces something circular — that is our policy, we need candidates who are decisive, the role is in demand. Asking for it in writing does most of the work on its own, because a date that will not be repeated in an email frequently loosens within a day.

The interesting branch is the right-hand one, because it does not end the process. It changes what you have learned about how this company will behave when you are the one asking for something.
Ask for a specific date, and give a reason
An extension request that names a date is far more likely to be granted than one asking for "a bit more time", because a recruiter has to defend it to somebody and a date is defensible. Attach the reason and a commitment to answer.
"I am genuinely keen and I want to say yes properly rather than quickly. I have one process concluding on Thursday and I would like to speak to my prospective manager once more before I commit. Could I come back to you by Friday midday? I will give you a decision then either way."
Ask for the least you need rather than the most you would like. A candidate who asks for two weeks against a stated twenty-four hours is asking the recruiter to abandon the deadline entirely; a candidate who asks for three working days is asking them to bend it. In parallel, tell the slower company plainly: you have an offer in hand, here is the date, can they compress. That is an ordinary request that recruiters act on, and it frequently converts a four-week process into a week.
What you must not sign without
Time pressure works by making the unknown feel tolerable. Decide in advance what you refuse to sign without, so the list is not being negotiated by your own anxiety at eleven at night. A short and defensible minimum: the written breakdown of the package, the vesting schedule if there is equity, the notice period and probation terms, any repayable joining or relocation amount, the named work location, and the identity of the manager you will report to.
That last one deserves emphasis. An offer where the reporting line is not settled is an offer whose most important variable is unresolved, and no amount of urgency makes that acceptable. It is entirely reasonable to say that you will sign as soon as you have those items and not before, which converts your position from a delay into a condition — something the recruiter can act on rather than argue with.
If the deadline genuinely will not move
Then you make the decision on what you have, and the decision is a comparison between a real offer and an uncertain alternative. Do it with the figures in front of you rather than with hoped-for ones. Suppose this offer is 100 units and you believe the other process, if it concludes, might reach 115. The 115 is not worth 15 more; it is worth 15 multiplied by the chance you get it, minus the value of the offer you would have declined. If you are at first round elsewhere, that probability is low enough that the choice is close to signing or holding nothing, and framing it that way usually clarifies it quickly.
It is also legitimate to decline. An offer you would only accept because you were rushed is one you will be reconsidering in three months, and a company that would not grant three days to a candidate they had chosen has shown you something about how requests are handled internally. That is a small signal, not proof, but it belongs in the decision alongside the money.
Accepting and then reneging
The tempting escape is to accept now and withdraw if something better arrives. It is not illegal in most places to change your mind before starting, though what a signed offer commits you to depends on your jurisdiction and on the document, so check the paper before assuming either way. The reason to avoid it is practical rather than moral. The team plans around you, the manager tells people, the other candidate is released, and the recruiter, the manager and the panel all remember the name. Engineering hiring circles are smaller than they appear and people move between the companies you will apply to next.
If you find yourself genuinely reneging because the alternative is materially better, do it immediately, by phone, without an elaborate explanation. Speed is the only part of it you control.
The reflex that costs the most
The failure here is rarely walking away and rarely signing. It is going silent — spending the twenty-four hours agonising, missing the deadline without engaging, and then asking the following week whether the offer still stands. Nothing about the deadline required you to decide in a day, but it did require you to respond in a day. Answer within hours, with either a decision or a dated request, and you keep every option that a considered candidate is entitled to.
